The world of search engines is a competitive place with big companies such as Microsoft, Yahoo!, and Google having a stake. The beauty of the online world, however, is that innovation can come from anywhere, and that is why Google has recently purchased an algorithm from a 26-year-old student.

Ori Allon was an Israeli student studying at the University of New South Wales in Australia. He developed an algorithm, called Orion, which allows for more intelligent searches through existing search engines. His work caught the eye of all the big search engines, but it is Google which bought his algorithm and gave him a job to boot.

The idea behind the Orion algorithm is to convey more information through text searches, therefore cutting down the amount of time someone needs to search, because more of the information to select the right link is in front of them. Orion does this by including snippets of text from the websites along with the search results.

The algorithm also produces a list of keywords with the results. This is useful, because it could offer the searcher words to use in their search they hadn't thought of yet.
